The Stumbling Block(Spiritual) Occasionally, those few times when we try to reflect on the meaning of life, a stumbling block awaits us. It doesn’t wait around the corner, or down the road, but appears instantly… daring us to take the first step. While a 'stumbling block' is merely a characterization, a symbolic term, it is highly apropos for a problem in the way. Stumbling blocks are certain to delay reaching a goal or can cause one to scuttle the idea... perhaps one's lifelong dream. The effects of stumbling blocks therefore can be powerfully determinate. Yet, knowing where to begin contemplating life is quite different than trying to solve lesser enigmas, those we might face occasionally in our daily affairs. Still, however solvable a 'lesser enigma' may seem, one which we might attempt to solve, we shouldn't automatically sidestep the seemingly unsolvable. It is strange in a way... even though a ‘stumbling block’ is ethereal, just the same they should be better described it seems, as having a particular size for example. After all, some stumbling blocks seem bigger than others. In any attempt to get from point ‘A’ to point ‘B’; invariably in our path is where stumbling blocks lurk. Usually they are only small stumbling blocks but until they are eliminated, they just seemed bigger. Most of these usually wait down the road however, or around the corner, and do not appear instantly. Those which appear instantly on a path is one path we might henceforth ignore… perhaps foolishly. — A.O. Kime (1941- ) Barking on Thursday(Humor) I once had a dog which barked everyday except Thursdays which made it a good day to write poetry. The problem was, my mind kept drifting off as to why my dog never barked on Thursdays. Since I didn’t know a dog's reasoning behind whether to bark or not, I decided to read more about dogs. One book said most dogs don’t need a good reason to bark… but nary a book addressed why a dog would have a reason NOT to bark. Trying to figure it out, I watched dogs when they didn’t bark to see what else they might be doing. When a dog just lies there, I thought he might be thinking about barking. While I don’t know when dogs decide to bark for no reason, I do know one thing… when one dog thinks it’s a good idea, so does every other dog in the neighborhood. I couldn’t figure it out and since it was driving me crazy, I decided to get another dog which doesn't bark. So I did... and so far, so good. But even if he turns out to be a barker... I want him to bark on Thursdays too. I don’t know where my old dog is now, but sometimes when I hear no dog barking on Thursdays, I think he’s back. — A.O. Kime (1941- ) Corporate Image(Satire) There are many things which contribute to the makeup of a 'corporate image' and, of course, all companies try to project that perfect image even though, ironically, everybody on God’s Green Earth sees it as pretense. While the importance of image is commonly known, and often stressed, billion dollar cottage industries sprang-up to fill the need. They could be called make-up artists. In the end, it becomes the 'projected image' versus the reality of that image. Yet, is it not productive to project a good image even if it isn’t exactly true? Portraying a good image helps move the company in the right direction… doesn’t it? It certainly isn’t a force for which to send it ethically downhill. So what’s wrong with portraying a company in such a positive light, if anything? Actually, there is little wrong with it, if you don’t count a little untruthfulness. Society allows for a little untruthfulness however, as falsies, wigs and cosmetic surgery can testify to. However I think most companies actually try to live up to their portrayed image. It’s a matter of pride… done for the same reason we comb your hair in the morning and try to wear nice clothes. Yet, all companies have some flaws… just as people do. While to comb one’s hair is also for personal gain, ostentatious in a sense and of some pretense, the truest reflection of a person is from them not combing.— A.O. Kime (1941- ) The River(Motivational) When some people make a decision to do something, often it’s like them jumping into a river and letting the current take over. Swept along in their predetermined direction, and with the main decision already made, many associated events will then occur automatically... as if destined to. While being swept along this symbolic river, in often uncharted waters, sometimes to be knocked around like a stick of mindless driftwood, nonetheless imaginative treading is required just to stay afloat. Eventually, when new events stop happening, is when they effectively and symbolically depart this river. Later, as an observer now sitting on the bank, they'll invariably notice people always seem to be in the river’s current, sometimes dozens of heads rushing by... their decision made. For the observers, it is then to wonder if life is passing them by once again… and the urge to jump back in re-emerges. For these people life isn’t like walking down a stationary path, uniform and predicable, or a matter of having days to think about which fork-in-the-road to take either. Their chosen lifestyle prefers a swift river and whatever rapidly approaching hazards there may be... no matter what, they’ll quickly be forced into making a decision. Sometimes, they only have seconds to choose. While a ‘path’ or ‘fork-in-the-road’ may be apropos for cautious folks, the ‘river’ is more applicable to gutsy decision-makers.— A.O. Kime (1941- ) Vintage Wine(Satire) There are some realities in life one cannot escape and unless you were born rich, it is to work for a living. Working for a living has its rewards too however, just as many or more than from being stinking rich. We should remember… surrounded by grand luxuries everyday, eventually and almost invariably, they become as if bottles of cheap wine. After all, a growing disrespectfulness of one’s possessions means they have become, in effect, cheap. On the other hand, there is a lasting appreciation for fine wine. And, because knowing exquisite wine must be properly aged... part of this appreciation is psychological. Vintage wine becomes, in a sense, a 'deferred' luxury and thus more appreciated... like one's wedding night or retirement. Workers aren’t really missing out on experiences either. What else can a person glean from seeing famous places more than once? How much more can a 60 ft yacht be appreciated over a motorboat? Well, unless you get your kicks by showing off… the difference is practically negligible. Besides, when one loses appreciation for their luxury items, as the pleasure having them fades, often such ownership evolves to sate other gratifications instead… and most of them aren’t pretty. It would be, however, great for awhile, that is until all the trappings begin to surpass the joy… like egocentricity and disrespectfulness just to name two. If occasional and deferred luxuries (like vintage wine) are best appreciated, then consider yourself waiting for the finest bottle to age, whereby it (retirement) can be fully appreciated… until at least, you too, are sick of it. — A.O. Kime (1941- ) Deep Thoughts(Motivational/spiritual) To try thinking about the 'act of thinking' yields virtually nothing and is short-lived. When one tries, in a matter of seconds their mind drifts off to other unrelated thoughts… like their aching back for example. It doesn't matter how hard you try, you simply can’t do it... that's because the act of thinking is, after all, metaphysical in nature of which mortal man knows little. Even the greatest thinkers couldn’t do it because nobody knows where to start but that applies to anything without a basis to form thoughts around. Only when one has a clue can the process begin. Therefore, when you find yourself unable to concentrate on something very long, there is a message in this. The length of time you are capable is directly related to the amount of information you have. We don’t often ponder things we know nothing about however. We can almost visualize what happens when we try though… it’s like a door slamming in our face or a telephone disconnect... because our mind cannot concentrate without information. Because of this, one can actually ascertain their own intelligence by summarizing what they are capable of thinking about in depth. As a test, try preparing a list of those things you know except don't make a subcategory a category. So what would qualify as a category? That's the first challenge... how to correctly subdivide knowledge in the face of life. — A.O. Kime (1941- )
